Один из критериев оптимальности, применяемых в экономико-математических плановых и прогнозных расчетах. Если рассматриваются несколько вариантов плана развития производства тех или иных продуктов, то лучшим признается тот, который обеспечивает М.н.э., включающий не только наибольшую суммарную эффективность производства, но и наибольшую эффективность потребления этих продуктов. То есть под экономическим эффектом здесь понимается разница в общих затратах как на производство, так и на использование (например, на эксплуатацию в промышленности, на транспорте и т.д.) эквивалентных количеств сравниваемых продуктов. В частности, такой критерий применялся при решении задач планирования производства синтетических материалов, взаимозаменяемых с естественными.
